Frequently Asked Questions

Why the Detroit Flag?

To show your love for Detroit! With the exception of a handful of institutions in the city that still fly it, the city's flag has all but disappeared. Be a part of the rebirth of Detroit by proudly flying your flag.

Who should buy a Detroit Flag?

Anyone who loves the city! Our flags are proudly hanging across the US and in foreign countries, as well as in our beloved state.

What does the flag mean?

The four quadrants symbolize the city's ownership since it's founding.

  • The Fluer-de-lis symbolizes the French founding in 1701.
  • The golden lions represent Britain and the Royal Arms of England during British ownership from 1760-1796 and during the war of 1812.
  • Both the stars and stripes quadrants represent the US.

The seal in the middle is symbolic of the fire of 1805, with the left figure weeping and the right figure gesturing toward the future. Speramus Meliora and Resurget Cineribus mean "We hope for better things" and "It will rise from the ashes".

Does the owner of this site live in the city?

Yes! He was born and raised in Michigan, currently lives in Detroit, and spends his time and money here.

Though he grew up in the Metro Detroit area and lived in the city for 7 years, he now resides in Austin, Texas, where he no longer gets to bike to Tigers games.

Where does the shield/crest come from in the logo?

This was inspired by a logo used for the 250th birthday of Detroit, in 1951. Images of that event can be seen in this Youtube video.
